I am an Associate Marriage & Family therapist with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University. I have many years of experience working with clients in both inpatient and outpatient settings to address acute psychological crises as well as ongoing issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, addictions, and relationship issues. In addition to my clinical experience my background in philosophy and poetry have also played essential roles in shaping and priming me for psychotherapy and counseling practice. I began studying the human condition long before becoming a clinician. My own artistic practice bolsters my ability and passion for witnessing and putting words to a previously unexamined experience. My clinical philosophy fuses object-relations and other psychodynamic approaches with a collaborative, postmodern stance. What that means is that I believe early experiences and relationships play a significant role in shaping how we act and feel in the present and exploring them in therapy is an important part of the work that I do. I am also interested in the role of narrative and how the story we tell ourselves about who we are and where we are going can also shape how we feel, think, and act. I am interested in a client’s total experience, their unconscious feelings and thoughts that reside behind behaviors and symptoms. I also practice from a trauma informed perspective which means I am aware and take into account of how traumatic events in your past may be playing a role in whatever issues you are currently having. Trauma can take place in the form of something happening in your life like child abuse or a car accident or something not happening in your life like childhood emotional neglect, C.E.N. In couples counseling, I utilize an EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and Gottman approach to foster healthier communication and strengthen the couple’s emotional bond. In session, I encourage my clients to speak freely as a means of uncovering the thoughts and emotions that may feel too alien or risky to put voice to in everyday life. I believe that addressing an individual’s underlying needs and fears is essential for creating lasting change. With empathy and curiosity, I assist my clients to gain a deeper understanding of their motives, emotions, and patterns of relating to others. It is my utmost privilege to walk alongside my clients on their journey to a freer, more authentic mode of being.
